Things around us have changed drastically in recent years. Recent advances in so-called high technologies such as IT, NT, and BT have shown us promises for improving the quality of life for people. However, such promises can be fulfilled only when other technologies constituting the infrastructure experience the similar advances. Although you may not notice, the things we use every day have become lighter, faster, more convenient and efficient. These are mainly due to the advances in structural materials, which form the basis of infrastructure. Despite such importance of structural materials, they have been experiencing a downturn (just like many technologies other than IT, NT, and BT) probably because they have been around us for a long, long time. However, recent global issues related to energy conservation and environmental protection have made us re-realize the importance of structural materials and we have to put our effort on developing high performance structural materials to tackle the issue.
In this presentation, current status and future of structural materials will be discussed emphasizing the role of structural materials in advancing the course of civilization. Recent achievements by Korean scientists will also be discussed.
